About: Labels for sites, groups, and devices

Last modified: Thursday May 11, 2023.

In addition to creating sites and groups to organize your devices logically, you can also create labels.

  • Compliment your existing device permissions by assigning labels to sites, device groups, and devices and then adding labels to the device permissions of your user groups.

  • For example, you could label specific devices in reception areas within multiple sites and existing device groups as "reception" and restrict reception users to access only those devices.

  • A future release will add search and filter options to enable the selection of labeled sites, groups, and devices for various Alta Aware features.

For more information, see How to: Create labels for sites, groups, and devices.

How labels work

You can assign a label directly to a device, group, or site. Labels are inherited from a parent site or group:

  • If you apply a label to a site, all device groups and devices in that site automatically gain that label.
  • If you apply a label to a device group, all devices in that group automatically gain that label.

You can also apply labels when adding cameras and other devices to your Alta Aware deployment.

Labels and user permissions

It is important to understand how user device permissions interact with labels applied to sites, device groups, and devices.

You can assign user groups permission to access all labels or give specific access to certain labels (Tools > Users > User groups > Device Permissions). For example, you could create a user group that has Administrator permissions for some labels and Operator permissions for others. For more information, see How to: Create User groups.

For sites:

  • Users with the admin role for a site label can add devices to all groups, create new groups, and move devices between groups.
  • Users with the operator role for a site label can view all devices in all groups.
  • Users with site and group edit permissions, but no permission for a specific label, can move groups and devices, but cannot assign or change labels for any site, group, or device with that label.

For groups:

  • Users with the admin role for a group label can add devices and move devices to any group with that label.
  • Users with the operator role for a group label can view all devices in a group with that label.
  • Users with group edit permissions, but no permission for a specific label, can move devices between those groups, but cannot assign or change labels for any group or device with that label.

For devices:

  • Users with the admin role for a device label can manage settings for devices with that label.
  • Users with the operator role for a device label can view the settings for devices with that label.
  • Users with site or group edit permissions, but no permission for a specific label applied to a device, cannot move that device to another site or group.

Role based permissions to add, edit, and delete labels

You can also give a role the specific permission to Add/Edit labels and Delete labels. You can then assign this role to user groups as required.

  • Go to Tools > Users > Roles > System permissions > required role > Devices.

  • Enable or disable Add/Edit labels and Delete labels as required.
