How to: Create live counts of objects in view

Last modified: Wednesday August 31, 2022.

Create counts of objects (people, vehicles, or both people and vehicles) that are in view from one or more cameras. This enables you, for example, to see the total number of people within an area.

The Alta Aware object counting features are not guaranteed to be accurate, providing an indicative measure only. Do not rely on object counts for safety-critical applications.

Task — Create Objects in view counts

  1. Choose Tools Tools > Counts Counts.
  2. Click Objects in view tab.
  3. Click Add new objects in view count.
  4. In Area name, type the name for the Object counting area.

You are limited to 40 characters for each Object counting area name.

  5. Select the type of count (People, Vehicles or Both people and vehicles).
For Vehicle or Both counts, select to count Any type of vehicle, or disable Any type, and select your required vehicle types (2 wheeled, Small/Medium vehicle, Large vehicle, or Unknown type) to include in the count.
  6. Select Exclude stationary objects to not count non-moving items, for example, to exclude parked vehicles from your counts.
  7. Click Next.
  8. Select the cameras to use for this Objects in view count.
  9. Optionally, define an Area of interest.
    1. Click the Area of interest icon Area of interest button.
If you have selected multiple cameras, click the thumbnail that corresponds to the relevant view.
    2. In the main camera view, click and drag to draw the rectangular Area of interest box for that view.
You can define multiple Areas of interest on each camera view.
    3. To create non-rectangular Areas of interest, select the area of interest, and drag the corner markers to the required positions.
  10. Click Next.

The Counts page displays the number of your selected objects currently in the view of the selected cameras.
