Ava-416: Escalation of privileges using Aware webhooks

Overview

An authenticated Ava Aware user with the permission to edit webhooks would have been able to craft a webhook to bypass the API authentication and gain full administrator access to Ava Aware and connected Ava cameras.

    • All Beta upgrade channel versions before 3.6.2.
  • Ava cameras:
    • All Stable upgrade channel versions before 3.5.6.
    • All Beta upgrade channel versions before 3.6.2.

  • Ava Aware:
    • All Stable upgrade channel versions after and including 3.5.6.
    • All Beta upgrade channel versions after and including 3.6.2.
  • Ava cameras:
    • All Stable upgrade channel versions after and including 3.5.6.
    • All Beta upgrade channel versions after and including 3.6.2.
  • Ava Cloud: all versions.

Resolution

This issue has been fixed in Ava Aware Beta upgrade channel version 3.6.2 and Stable upgrade channel version 3.5.6. It is crucial that all installations running an affected version are upgraded to the latest release as soon as possible. Releases are available to download through the Ava Aware User Interface. This issue has been fixed in Ava camera Beta upgrade channel version 3.6.2 and Stable upgrade channel version 3.5.6. Work arounds

The work around for this issue is to remove the "Add/Edit time templates and webhooks" permission for all non-administrator users.
